What are you binging?
I have some “entertainment” recommendations heading into summer. Four great books to start. This is not the time (for me anyway) to be lugging weighty tomes to the beach! I like to be entertained and engrossed. If you liked Donna Tartt’s The Secret History, you will love this book. Set in New York, it follows a recent college graduate from a small town in the Northwest, navigating the city and a dark secret at the Cloisters. Intrigue, tarot cards and Renaissance art follows.
Pineapple Street is a light and airy book about an old New York family in the Brooklyn fruit street neighborhood. Lots of money, a big historic home, family drama, trust funds. You get the gist – a fun read.
Set in the mid-1990’s, Sam has always been in love with Sadie Green. He fell in love with her when he was 12. He sees her in the subway station in Boston and yells out her name. They are both in college, she is at MIT and he is at Harvard. But, this is really a book about gaming. Sadie and Sam create an incredibly successful video game in the early days of gaming, and their lives are intertwined forever. Don’t let the “gaming” part deter you from reading this fabulous book!
Jean Korelitz is the author of The Undoing which became the popular TV series with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. Her book The Latecomer is about The Oppenheimers, a complicated New York family. Salo Oppenheimer is an early collector of 1980’s art, a topic I always love. But, the accident he has in college is the defining moment in his life….. I am not doing this book justice with my review, so read the NYT review here! I loved it.
This is SO GOOD!!!!!!! I have been a Keri Russell fan since Felicity and The Americans and she shines here. The eight episodes go fast, so start working on Season 2 Netflix!
Harrison Ford is having a moment and we are here for it! This show and the entire cast is fantastic.
That’s all – watch it!
Daisy Jones and the Six….. I know this is a fan favorite, but I was meh on this series. I thought the cast was fantastic, especially Riley Keough. But it dragged toward the end and I was ready to pull the rip. If you want a better version of this, watch the amazing documentary Laurel Canyon on Amazon.
How this small enclave in California produced some of the most amazing musicians of the 1960’s and 1970’s.
A two-part documentary about Brooke Shields on HULU. An intimate look at her life, career and mom manager – and how she survived all of the choices made for her early in her career!
I haven’t seen this yet, but there is a lot of buzz around Sharper (Apple TV). The other TV series I am looking forward to watching are The Citadel with Stanley Tucci on Prime and A Small Light on National Geographic.
This movie is FABULOUS! I loved seeing Matt Damon and Ben Affleck together again and who doesn’t adore Jason Bateman? So, so much fun.
Here he is again AND with my Flea Bag obsession, Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Rejoice, the next installment of Indiana Jones opens on June 30th! Also on my movie list, You Hurt My Feelings with Julia Louis Dryfuss and Starling Girl, both coming out in May. Tim and I just went to see Chevalier in the theatre. Very interesting story and movies set in Paris are always great. But, just not for me. Tim, on the other hand, was a fan.
Lastly, two exhibits that look really good. Georgia O’Keeffe: To See Takes Time. Georgia O’Keeffe was the first woman artist to have a dedicated retrospective at MOMA. Seventy-seven years later, this iconic artist has another one. A series of her works in charcoal, pencil, watercolor and pastel from April 9 – August 12, 2023.
This one I would REALLY like to see…. At the Paris Fondation Louis Vuitton, Basquiat x Warhol. Painting Four Hands from April 5 – August 28, 2023. Those of you who know me well, know how much I love Basquiat and his friendship with Warhol. I saw the Broadway play The Collaboration about this same painting collaboration. It does not look like I will get there, but please go if you have a trip to France scheduled!
That is it!
